I Am Not Here

February 28, 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 5:45 pm

This play is about women’s writing as much as it is about silence. When looking for censored literature by women playwrights, it was nearly impossible for us to find appropriate texts. It doesn’t mean that women playwrights have enjoyed a greater degree of freedom through history but there are few written of us who wrote such. There is no need to censor the writing when you can’t find any.

What do we understand by censorship? Is it an insidious thing which has many ways of entering us? What is the cost of dissent, of protest in performance? Is it always necessary to bear wounds in front of an audience for the stories of the marginalized? What is the silence after the protest like? Is it broken? Or is there meaning to be made and a new language to be formed? The play revolves around these questions through the two female performers occupying a boxing ring. With each passing rounds, their performance unfolds different answers.
